01The body carries the first information.
Interoception helps us notice signals from within: a racing heart, a tight stomach, warmth, tension, energy building or fading. These signals meet what is happening around us, memory and relationships. Gradually, children learn to recognise patterns, make meaning and discover what may help.
02Regulation expands possibilities.
Regulation involves recognising our state, understanding what may be happening and mobilising resources that fit the experience. These resources may help us move closer, step away, slow down, activate, ask for help, protect a boundary, repair a relationship or try another response. Calm is one of many possible states.
03Relationships are part of the process.
The capacity for self-regulation develops through repeated experiences of co-regulation. An available adult helps the child notice, brings language to the experience, offers safety and supports exploration. Over time, lived support becomes part of the child’s inner resources.
